Sep13Hygiene in a Hurry: The ad hoc SHOWER
Carrie

My morning shower success rate stands at about 25% right now. I have to wait until both of my kids are asleep before I dare shut the bathroom door and step into the shower. That happens just about never, which doesn’t bode well for me. As it turns out, having a stinky, dirty face makes it hard to get work/make friends/parent with authority.

Wandering around drugstores these days, I’ve been noticing lots of new facial “cleansing cloths.” They seemed like a perfect solution for getting clean in a hurry. Think of them as diaper wipes for your face. I bought a whole bunch to see which ones I liked the best and made Tonya and our friend Erin try them, too. Erin and Tonya tried them blind, and we all rated them based on scent, texture and finish. Here’s what we found out.

1. Garnier  Nutri-Pure Detoxifying Wet Cleansing Towelettes
That’s a whole lot of name for a wipe! But these smell pretty and feel the most “cosmetic” of the bunch. I think they were refreshing, but Tonya thought they left her skin a little filmy. Still, if you’re going for a slighty perfumey cleanser, these are fun. They even have Vitamin B5 and Green Leaf Extract.

2. Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths
Ahhh, Noxzema! That signature scent always takes me back to high school – in a good way! Erin, however, was so taken aback by the strong smell, she didn’t even want to test these. Tonya didn’t care for the scent either, but I love these. They feel like they do an extra good job of cleaning my face, leaving it tingly and fresh. When it came time to pack for a trip, I grabbed these.

3. Olay Daily Facials Express Wet Cleansing Cloths These cloths are fragrance-free, so if you have sensitive skin, these are you’re best bet. They have a soft texture and leave your skin feeling clean and slightly moisturized. These are Erin’s top pick of the bunch. Because they are so gentle, these are probably the only ones I would feel comfortable wiping over my eyes.

4. CVS Toddler Wipes
So just how different are all of these wipes from plain old diaper wipes? I decided to include CVS toddler wipes in the blind test to see if we could save some money by buying one product for two functions. These are billed as “safe for sewers & septic systems” and “flushable”—not very compelling selling points, I admit. During the bind test, Erin sussed these out immediately due to their teddy bear/duck pattern, as well as their “rough” texture. But would you believe it—Tonya picked THESE as her overall favorite?? She thought they left her face feeling clean without any filmy residue. The moral of the less-than-scientific blind beauty test? Treat your face at least as well as you would treat your toddler’s poop. Err…or something along those lines…

I stand by my choice of the toddler wipes. They were great. And also I obviously have no idea about quality.

Okay, wait. I discovered face wipes about a year ago. Now I consider the “wipe” one step below a shower. The problem is they’re expensive. So I find myself saving them up. Skipping days of face wiping. I’ve been using the pharmacy brand generics for the most part. I think us aging ladies aren’t supposed to even put soap on our face because there’s a finite amount of moisture our tired cells can produce. ever. Some are soupier than the rest. I’m gonna try the wipes. Thanks, ad-hoc mom! Next: disposable underwear?

Also: I made the strange choice to take a shower at 4:30 in the afternoon today with both kids home. I decided I couldn’t be a nice mom feeling so dirty. So I let them take all the cushions of the couch and trash the place for 20 minutes with the door open to the bathroom. Five is old enough to babysit right?

You had me at Green Leaf Extract — I’m a sucker for all that herbal marketing crap. I’m always too tired to wash my face these days, but probably shouldn’t keep waking up with mascara down to my nostrils. I’m going to give one of these a whirl! Tempted to try toddler wipes….

Will definitely check out facial wipes, in order of how many appealing words it takes to describe them. Who can resist detoxifying after taking care of a 15 month old with a hacking cough and runny nose? Their “purity” is an added bonus.

You didn’t mention taste. Do any of them come in the following flavors: gin and tonic, double-shot of espresso, or apple pie?
